Mrs. Pocahontas Mayo Lewis, 94, of Swainton, NJ, was born in Hillsborough, NC on April 12, 1931 to George and Peggy Whitted Mayo. She was born in a time when much of the country was navigating the Great Depression and life for African Americans was defined by strict, state-mandated segregation. In spite of the challenges of the times, she had a happy childhood along with her brother Robert "Bobby" in a tight-knit, self-sustaining community. As time went on their sister Stephanie joined the family.She attended Hillsborough High School (later known as Central High School) where she was active in sports, playing on the girls basketball team. A few years after high school she went up North to Wildwood, NJ, to work for the summer, where she met the love of her life, Leslie L. Lewis, and started her new life in New Jersey.
