Mrs. Parker, age 93 and a resident of Edgemere, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 11, 2018 after a lengthy illness. She was born on December 10, 1924 in Wichita Falls, Texas, the youngest daughter of Ruth Smith Cain and Valentine William Cain. She was a loving and much loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. Affectionately known as “Mimi,” she loved her extended family and never missed the opportunity to be with family and friends.
Mrs. Parker spent most of her formative years in Houston and graduated from San Jacinto High and the University of Texas. A speech major at UT, she was elected to Radio House and won numerous contests and awards for declamation and extemporaneous speaking. She was a dedicated volunteer in various organizations, having earned a Lifetime Membership in PTA for her contributions at her children’s schools. In addition, she maintained a lifelong interest in family history and genealogy. In that vein, she was state president of CAR and a longtime member of DAR, having served as regent of the James Campbell Chapter. She loved travel and did so extensively with her husband and family.
She was a devoted Christian with a strong and abiding faith. She was a member of Highland Park Methodist Church and derived great joy as a member of the 2 x 2 class for over 60 years.
Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years Benjamin Jabe Parker, Jr. and her sisters Thelma Ruth Cain Crumpler and Vera Douglas Cain Kerbow. She is survived by three daughters and their husbands: Rebecca Lynn Parker Clark (John Blue Clark, Jr) of Charlotte, NC, Barbara Jean Parker McCoy (Michael Walters McCoy) of Plano, and Ann Elizabeth Parker McCarthy (Thomas Francis McCarthy) of Cornelius, NC. Mimi was very proud of her grandchildren: John Benjamin Clark, Justin Parker Clark, Kallen Mathew McCoy, and Rebecca Ann McCoy Lambert, and her five great-grandchildren: Parker Elizabeth Clark, Campbell Louise Clark, Whitfield Gunn McCoy, Hollins Michael McCoy, and Benjamin Brooks McCoy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, February 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Cox Chapel, Highland Park Methodist Church, with a reception following the service. Graveside funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the Youngblood Cemetery in Beckville, Texas with Bro. Pete Williams officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home.
