Memorial graveside services for Mrs. Sue Koonce, 74, of the Woods Community of Panola County, Texas will be 11:00 A.M., Monday, May 15, 2017 at the Gary Cemetery with Rev. Dale Walker officiating. Services are under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Mrs. Koonce passed away May 11, 2017 at her home in the Woods Community.
Mrs. Alice Sue Campbell Koonce was born July 12, 1942 in Beaumont, Texas. She was one of two girls born to Elmo Clifford and Irene Mildred Smith Campbell. Sue graduated from Gary High School and later received her nurse’s license from Kilgore College. She worked for Center Hospital and later ETMC-Carthage where she helped set up and run their OB Departments. She married James Earl Koonce on July 14, 1973 and together they celebrated 43 years until he preceded her in death in 2015. Sue loved cooking, sewing canning and gardening. But most of all she loved to spend time with her grandchildren. Sue is also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Robin Melinda Murphy; and sister, Barbara Strain Howard.

Mrs. Koonce is survived by her children, Madeline Stryon and husband Cory of Farmington, NM, Melanie Gordon and husband Steve of Longview, Wendy Hudman and husband Bob of the Woods Community, James Russell Koonce of Austin; grandchildren, Megan Kimbro, Holly Hammons, Miranda Hammons, Erin Hammons, Dusty Seay, Cameron Barton, Taylor Barton, Madison Hudman, Shelby Hudman, Todd Hudman, Jordan Hudman, Shane Hudman; great grandsons, Thomas Chapman and Noah Lee Brasher; sisters-in-law, Sue Koonce of Carthage and Wanda Price of Houston; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. 
If desired, the family requests that donations be made in Sue’s name to Eastside Baptist Church, 1996 FM 999, Gary, Texas 75643.
