Services for G. Dean Soape, 84 of Carthage, will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Carthage with Reverend Rick Linebarger and Reverend Justin King officiating. Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hawthorn Funeral Home Friday night. Dean peacefully passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018 at his home.
Gerald Dean Soape was born March 30, 1933 in Carthage. He was one of three children born to Herman Franklin and Hazel Havana Blair Soape. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1950, attended Panola Junior College and graduated on May 25, 1954 from Stephen F. Austin State University with a B.B.A. degree in Accounting. Dean married Iva Nell Ritter on May 27, 1953. After graduation, Dean and Iva Nell moved to Houston where they began their journey of 64 years together. Dean began working in Houston at Peat Marwick Mitchell, a national accounting firm, as a tax accountant to support his young family while he attended the University of Houston at night to obtain his law degree which was received in 1959 along with his law license. During this time of work and attending law school, in 1956 Dean received his Certified Public Accounting certification from the State of Texas.
In 1960, after successfully becoming an Attorney and a CPA, Mr. Soape opened his own law practice in Houston. In 1970, he opened his law and tax office in Carthage while also retaining his practice in Houston. He holds two Board Certifications by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Taxation and in Probate and Estate Planning. He was a member of the State Bar of the State of Texas, the Panola County Bar Association and the College of the State Bar of Texas. He was licensed to practice law in all of the State Courts in Texas, the Federal District Courts, Southern and Eastern Districts and the U.S. Federal Tax Court. He was a licensed Real Estate Broker, a Master Mason of the Houston Lodge No. 1339 and Carthage Lodge No. 521 for over 50 years, served on the Board of Trustees for the Baptist Missionary Association Theological Seminary but dearest to his heart was being ordained as a Deacon at the Southview Baptist Church in Houston and serving as a Deacon and Treasurer at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Carthage.
He is survived by his wife, Iva Nell Ritter Soape; children, Jerry Soape and fiance′ Susie Cockrell Parker, Jan Soape Wills, and Judi Soape Henigan and husband Keith; grandchildren, Jeremy Henigan and fiance′ Hannah Harris, Ricky Joe Wills and wife Christina, Jessi Soape Lee and husband Coby, Trey Soape and Paige Parker. Great-grandchildren, Riley Jo Wills, Ryder Wills, Stella Lee, Landon LaGrone and Kali Fulsom; and his sister, Kathryn Soape McKellar.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Hazel Soape; granddaughter, Deana Henigan; and brother, Herman E. Soape
