Services will be conducted for Dr. Maverick Marvin Harris, 85 of Marshall, Tx on Saturday, May 20th at 10:00 a.m. at Cumberland Presbyterian Church where Dr. Harris was a member. Officiating will be Rev. Rusty Rustenhaven and Rev. Mary Katherine Kirkpatrick. Visitation will be at Sullivan Funeral Home on Friday, May 19th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be conducted at Lee Cemetery in Winnsboro, Tx on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
Dr. Harris entered into rest on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born in Eagle Pass, Tx and lived in Marshall for many years. He completed his undergraduate degree at Baylor University, Masters Degrees from Baylor University and the University of Texas at Austin, and a Masters of Divinity from Southwestern Seminary, Fort Worth, Tx. He received a PhD in English from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Harris was ordained to the ministry at Calvary Baptist Church in Waco, Tx. He was Chairman of the English Department at East Texas Baptist University and was the first professor from ETBU to be named Professor Emeritus. He also held positions on several state English and American Study organizations and was a published author of numerous book reviews and articles and was author to his autobiography, “GLADLY LERNE…GLADLY TECHE”, the title of which reflected his outlook on life.
Dr. Harris enjoyed traveling both in the United States and countries abroad. He also enjoyed their Friday night dates and camping trips with “The Group.” After retirement he discovered his love and talent for needlework, which he proudly displayed and shared with his family and friends.
Dr. Harris was preceded in death by one son, Scott Dickson Harris; his parents, Ross and Willie Bea Harris; three brothers, Enoch, Bill, and Chester Harris.
He is survived by his very best friend and wife of 60 years, Sandra Harris; two daughters, Angie Harris and husband Eddy, and Cindy Leopard and husband Pat; one son, Mark Harris and wife Maribel; five grandchildren, Joseph Robberts and wife Natasha, Alisha Robberts, Patrick Leopard, Matthew Leopard, and Nico Harris; six great-grandchildren, Tyler, Taylor, Tristan, Kaden, Addison, and Peyton; two nephews, one niece and a host of friends.
The family would like to especially thank caregivers Evelyn, Donnie, Kristen, Genia, and Benita and the staff of Marshall Hospice.
