Elsie H. Battin of Las Vegas, Nevada passed away in her sleep on January 20, 2015 at a private hospice home after a long battle with congestive heart disease.  

Elsie was born in Queens Village, New York on May 27, 1927 to parents Hedvig and Samuel Svenssen who migrated from Norway. After graduating from high school Elsie worked in New York City a few years and then met and married George P. Battin.  Elsie and her family lived in the Chicago area and Centerville, Iowa before moving to Jacksonville, Texas in 1956.  While living in Irving, Texas, Elsie worked as a loan officer for First Texas Savings & Loan for several years and retired in 1981.  In 1986 Elsie and her husband retired to their lake house in Jacksonville.

Elsie was a member of the ceramics class at Central Baptist Church, Jacksonville for over ten years.  She and her husband were members of the Lake Jacksonville Supper Club for many years.  Along with her husband, Elsie was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Jacksonville.

Elsie’s hobbies were cooking, gardening, ceramics, sewing, playing the piano, bowling and crocheting.  Over the years she made many lovely items that she gave away to family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and brother Larry Swenson and her beloved husband George P. Battin.

Survived By

She is survived by her sons, Philip Battin and wife Denise, Larry Battin and wife Kathy; daughter Christine Latchaw; grandson Aaron Latchaw and wife Jessica; granddaughter Tricia Battin; great-granddaughter Olivia Martin; great-grandson Philip Martin; five nephews; four nieces and sister-in-law Dr. Candee Swenson. Special acknowledgements goes out to Dr. James Low and wife Patty; home health nurse Melissa Flores; and the many others for their loving care.

Memorial Requests

In lieu of flowers the family requets donations be made to the SPCA of East Texas or mail to P.O. Box 132899, Tyler, TX 75713.
