In 1898, Texarkana was a booming post-Civil War railroad town where fortunes were being made in the timber and cotton industries. That same year, East Funeral Home was founded by E.C. East and his wife Queen East.
The turn of the century saw many entrepreneurs from the north and east make their way to Texarkana seeking their fortunes. Around 1904, a young German immigrant by the name of William F. Meissner moved his family from Springfield, Illinois, to Texarkana to join E.C. East in the operation of East Funeral Home.
Upon East’s death a few years later, Meissner purchased the firm and continued to manage the business until his death in 1936. Mrs. Meissner and her two daughters, Doris Craig and Leota Malaby, continued the joint management of the business with the able assistance of J.B. Malaby, Haskell Hay, and C.H. Malone. Upon the death of J.B. Malaby in 1961, his son, David, purchased the business and continued the family tradition. Presently, David Malaby’s son-in-law, Brad Thomas, is the current location manager, and has been with East Funeral Home since 1984.East Funeral Home continues it's loyalty and dedication to the families we serve and to the Texarkana area as a Dignity provider.
